Three Blugolds Named to Capital One Academic All-America Teams

TOWSON, Md. (Blugolds.com) – Three members of the UW-Eau Claire track & field and cross country programs have been named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America Division III Track & Field/Cross Country Teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Recognized with the honor were men's track & field/cross country member Jeremy Kieser (Sr.-Verona, Wis.) and women's track & field and cross country members Ashlyn Mauer (Sr.-Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) and Erin Schoenfelder (Sr.-Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community).

Kieser, a senior from Verona, Wis., boasts a 3.94 grade point average and is majoring in computer engineering/physics.

At the 2013 NCAA Division III Outdoor track & Field Championship, he finished in fifth place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to earn All-American honors for the first time in his career. He placed second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the WIAC championship for the second time in his career.  Kieser also was second in 2011 and finished fourth in 2012. In indoor WIAC competition, he took third in the 3,000-meter run this year and fifth in the 5,000-meter run in 2012 and sixth in 2011. As a member of the cross country squad, Kieser claimed All-America honors in 2012 after finishing 15th at the NCAA Division III Championship.

A senior from Sheboygan Falls, Wis., Mauer boasts a 3.97 grade point average and is majoring in communication science and disorders.

Mauer won the 2013 outdoor WIAC title in the 3,000-meter steeplechase while also winning the same event in 2011. During the 2011 WIAC Indoor Championship, she won the 5,000-meter run title. A two-time All-American, Mauer took fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at outdoor nationals this season while she took sixth place last fall at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championship to earn All-American honors, leading the team to a fifth place finish.

Schoenfelder, a senior from Antioch, Ill. (Community), is majoring in elementary education and owns a 3.98 grade point average.

Schoenfelder secured the WIAC title in the 100-meter hurdles at the conference championship this season and placed third in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles. She won the 400-meter intermediate hurdles in 2011 after finishing second in 2010. Schoenfelder is a five-time All-American, winning three awards in indoor competition and two at outdoor nationals. At the 2013 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championship, she earned the NCAA's Elite 89 award.

Coming into the 2012-13 season, 37 different individuals had received Academic All-American honors from CoSIDA but six were added this season, bringing the total in school history to 43 individuals. Soccer player Gina Williams, women's basketball player Sarah Bingea and men's hockey player Jordan Singer were named Capital One Academic All-Americans earlier this year.
