1999-00 Men’s Basketball National Runner-up to be Recognized Saturday

Four points.

One of the most successful seasons in the history of University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's basketball ended in the 1999-2000 national championship game, down by four points.

Though those four points separated them from the title of the nation's best team, when the team takes the court this Saturday, they will be honored as champions.

The team boasted a potent pair of scorers and an affinity toward the three-point shot that led to season records in team threes attempted and team makes from deep.

Sherm Carstensen, the leader scorer that year, turned in the second most points in a single season in program history. He would finish his career with the sixth most points (1,718) of any player to ever dawn the blue and gold.

He was joined by Jon Wallenfelsz, who graduated after the season and sits at ninth among all-time Blugolds in points scored (1,538).

They were coached by Terry Gibbons, who accumulated 235 victories in his 16-year tenure with the team.

The team will be recognized as the Blugolds, (3-4, 0-1 WIAC) host UW-River Falls (3-4. 1-0 WIAC) at 5 p.m. Saturday in Zorn Arena.
