Men’s Basketball Competes Against Winona State

WINONA, Minn. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire men's basketball team faced live competition for the first time this season matching up with NCAA Division II Winona State University here tonight at McCown Gymnasium.

The Blugolds went up against a hot Winona State team in the first.  The Warriors connected on 68% of their first half shots at they built a 45-31 half time lead.  Eau Claire made 10-of-26 field goals in the first half which included a 5-for-16 performance from the three-point line.  The Blugolds outrebounded the Warriors 12-11 and both teams recorded five assists in the first half.

The second half saw the Blugolds warm up from the floor making 15-of-31 shots from the field and six-of-15 attempts from behind the arc.  Adam Hjelter (Jr.-Hutchinson, MN) led the outside shooting display connecting on four-of-six three-point attempts.  The Blugolds outscored the Warriors 42-38 in the second half.

Hjelter led all scorers with 19 points.  Jack Martinek (So.-New Brighton, MN/Irondale) scored 13 points on five-of-eight shooting from the field.  Lewis Mau (Sr.-Colfax, WI) scored 10 points and tied Martinek with a team-best five rebounds.

The Blugolds will officially kick off the 2014-15 season when they travel to face the University of St. Thomas on Saturday, November 15.  Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
