Men’s Basketball Wins Home-Opener, 64-57

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire men's basketball team evened their record to 1-1 after winning their home-opener against Viterbo University on Tuesday night at Zorn Arena.

Both teams had a cold night from the field, shooting under 50 percent from the field in the first half. The score remained close until Viterbo went on a run to close out the first half, taking a 23-30 lead into the locker room, the biggest lead of the game.

The Blugold defense tighten in the second half, shutting down Viterbo's David Shephard who scored 16 of Viterbo's 30 first half points. Shephard only tallied five points the rest of the game.

UWEC's balanced scoring attack was too much for the V-Hawks as 10 different Blugolds tallied points.

Kevin Jensen (So.-Victoria, MN) paced UWEC with 12 points while Tyson Kalien (Jr.-Chippewa Falls, WI) chipped in 11. Lewis Mau (Sr.- Colfax, WI) recorded a double-double, scoring 11 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.

Viterbo's Shephard led all scorers with 21 points and tied Mau with a game-high 10 rebounds.

The Blugolds will go on the road this weekend as they travel to Wheaton, Ill. to play in the Lee PFund Classic. UWEC's first game will be Friday night at 6:00 p.m. versus Washington University.
