EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire wrestling team opened their season at home on Monday with a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) dual against UW-Stevens Point. The Blugolds started the season strong with a 28-16 win over the Pointers.
Jack Marley (Jr. – Trempealeau, WI/ Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau) started things off for UWEC with an 8-6 victory at 125. Markus Brown (Fr. – Iron River, WI/Northwestern) later tallied Eau Claire first pin of the season in 3:43 of the 141 match.
Jan Hernandez-Soto (Fr. – Minneapolis, MN/Patrick Henry) and Evan Lawrence (Sr. – Hugo, MN/Mahtomedi) both won their matches with major decisions. Sam Melton (So. – Shell Lake, WI/Spooner) and Mason Hawkins (Sr. – Farmington, MN) followed suit with major decision victories of their own to seal the deal for Eau Claire at 197 and 285.
The Blugolds will hit the road later in the week for two invitationals on Saturday, November 7th. One squad will head to the Messiah Invitational in Mechanicsburg, PA and the other will participate in the Yellowjacket Open in Rochester, MN.
