Strong third period lifts Men’s Hockey over Oles

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (Blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's hockey team defeated the St. Olaf Oles 4-2 on Saturday night at Northfield Ice Arena.

Following a devastating last second loss on Thursday, the Blugolds used a three-goal third period to get back in the win column.

The Blugolds would find themselves trailing 1-0 late in the second period, but Kyle Lee (Sr. – Wausau, WI) helped turn the tide with his fourth goal of the season to tie things up with three minutes left. Tyler Tomberlin (So. – St. Paul, MN) and Nathan Dingmann (Fr. – Plymouth, MN) were credited with the assists on the goal.

UW-Eau Claire held a commanding 36-15 lead in shots on goal through two periods of play.

Jacob Wolter (Sr. – Fairbanks, AK) gave the Blugolds the lead just 33 seconds into the final frame on his second goal of the year assisted by brother Colton Wolter (Sr. – Fairbanks, AK) to make it 2-1. 

The Blugolds would concede a shorthanded goal about four minutes later, but would get a much needed response from Tomberlin just two minutes later to make it 3-2 assisted again by Dingmann.

Alex Strand (So. – Roseau, MN) would add the insurance goal just over 12 minutes into the final period assisted by Lucas Kohls (Jr. – Forest Lake, MN) and Braxton Collins (Fr. – Eau Claire, WI) to go on to win 4-2. 

Despite finishing 0-5 on the power play and conceding a shorthanded goal, UW-Eau Claire has to feel good about the 51-22 advantage in shots on goal at the end of 60 minutes. 

Zach Dyment (Fr. - Abbotsford, BC) made his fifth straight start in net for the Blugolds and earned the win to improve to 3-2 saving 20 of the 22 shots he saw on the night.

The Blugolds (11-7-0, 1-1-0) will now look to string wins together as the heat of conference play approaches. UW-Eau Claire will be back on the ice on Thursday on the road at UW-River Falls.
