MADISON, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – Four UW-Eau Claire student-athletes have been named Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Athletes of the Week, WIAC Assistant Commissioner for Media Relations Matt Stanek announced today.
Honored this week were football wide receiver Matthew Knapp (So.-Eau Claire, WI/Memorial), women's soccer midfielder Ashley Seymour (Jr.-Verona, WI), men's swimmer Thomas Hensen (So.-Delafield, WI/Kettle Moraine) and women's diver Amanda Baker (Jr.-Hudson, Wis.).
In a 20-17 victory over UW-Stout on Nov. 1, Knapp scored two touchdowns, while leading the Blugolds in receiving with 125 yards on 11 catches. His first touchdown came with 6:56 left in the opening quarter on a 23-yard pass, while his second touchdown came on a nine-yard pass with 39 seconds remaining in the first half.
Seymour and the Blugold defense allowed just two goals in two games as the Blugolds beat two conference opponents during the week. In a 3-2 overtime win over UW-River Falls on Nov. 1, the Blugolds allowed 10 shots, six on-goal, while defending against five corner kicks. Seymour also had two assists in the game against Falcons, the tying goal with less than two minutes to play and the game-winner in overtime. In a 1-0 win over UW-Stout on Oct. 29, the Blugolds faced 16 shots, only three of which were on-goal, and defended against five corner kicks.
In a 148-139 win over Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) on Nov. 1, Hensen won the 100-yard backstroke in 56.06 seconds and the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:04.84.
Baker swept both diving events against Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) on Nov. 1, winning the one-meter and three-meter boards with scores of 270.6 and 293.1 points, respectively. The scores in both events were good enough to allow Baker to qualify for the NCAA Regionals. It is the second time this season that Baker has earned WIAC Athlete of the Week honors.
