Shult Takes 2nd Overall, Blugolds Finish 2nd at WIAC Championships

WEST SALEM, Wis. (blugolds.com) — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's cross country team competed in the WIAC Championships hosted by UW-La Crosse on Saturday. The Blugolds took second out of eight teams, finishing only behind UW-La Crosse.

The UW-Eau Claire women raced in ideal conditions at Maple Grove in West Salem. The Blugolds scored 50 points total in their second-place finish behind UW-La Crosse, who scored 26 points.  

Carolyn Shult (Sr. - Augusta, Wis.) was the top Blugold with a second-place finish at 21:47.6, which earned her a WIAC first-team placement. Next in for Eau Claire was Katie Faris (Sr. - Chippewa Falls, Wis.) with an eighth-place finish at 22:43.8 and a WIAC second-team placement.

Also scoring for the Blugolds in the team's top five were Ashley Kachurik (Sr. - Wadsworth, Ill./Warren Township) in ninth with a 22:45.3 and a WIAC second-team placement, Naomi Long (Sr. - Medina, Minn./Wayzata) in 12th with a 22:56.5 and a WIAC second-team placement, and Keeley Behr (Fr. - Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley) in 20th with a 23:31.6 and a WIAC honorable mention.

"It was a good opportunity to work together as a team and it gets us excited for upcoming races. We got to see new competition in La Crosse that will get us ready to face them at regionals," Shult said.

The Blugolds will be back in action at the Luther Saga Cup in Decorah, Iowa, on Friday, November 4 at 4:15 p.m.
