Volleyball Takes Third at WIAC Championship

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire women's volleyball team bounced back from a loss last night in the WIAC Semifinals to defeat UW-La Crosse 3-0 in the third place match of the WIAC Championship at UW-Stevens Point today.

The first set was close but Eau Claire came out on top 27-25. Eau Claire led a majority of the set but after a 19-19 tie, the teams went back and forth before the Blugolds came out on top.

In the second set, the teams played close and found themselves tied at 20. From there the Blugolds outscored the Eagles 5-1 to win 25-21.

It was again close in the final set as La Crosse worked its way to an 11-6 lead before Eau Claire used a 7-0 run to get up 13-11. From there the Blugolds never trailed again and won 25-21.

The Blugolds finished with a hitting percentage of .244 with 48 kills and 19 errors in 119 attempts. La Crosse hit .123 with 38 kills and 23 errors out of 122 attempts.

Leading the Blugolds with 13 kills was Kelly Schuh (Sr.-Appleton, Wis./Hortonville) while Keagan Kinsella (Fr.-Chanhassen, Minn.) finished with 11. Kinsella led the match with a .474 hitting percentage.

Lauren Sutherland (Sr.-Dayton, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian) led the match with 18 digs and Maggie Holcombe (Fr.-Shakopee, Minn.) had 41 set assists to lead the match.

Eau Claire is now 21-15 on the season while La Crosse drops to 15-15 overall.

The Blugolds will now wait to see if they earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Championship. The announcement will be streamed live on NCAA.com at 10 a.m. Monday.
