Women's Volleyball Splits on Final Day in Missouri

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (Blugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire women's volleyball team went 1-1 on the final day of the Washington University Tournament, falling 3-1 to sixth-ranked Elmhurst University (Ill.) and then winning over Millikin University 3-0.

In the first match against Elmhurst, Kelly Schuh (Sr.-Appleton, Wis./Hortonville), who was named to the All-Tournament Team, led the Blugolds with 18 kills while teammate Mackenzee Pierog (Fr.-Eau Claire, Wis./North) added another nine.  Lauren Sutherland (Sr.-Dayton, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian) finished with 14 digs to lead the team on defense.

Against Elmhurst, the Blugolds dropped the first two sets, 25-23 and 25-17, but bounced back in the third with a 25-15 win. In the final set, Elmhurst jumped out to a 6-1 lead and the Blugolds could never recover as they fell 25-18.

Against Millikin, Schuh once again led the Blugolds with ten kills. Pierog added seven more and teammates Kelly Riesgraf (So.-Chaska, Minn.) and Katrina Raskie (Fr.-Weston, Wis./D.C. Everest) each contributed six of their own kills.

Facing Millikin, all three sets were close. The Blugolds never trailed in the opening set and won 25-21 but in the final two sets, Eau Claire won by just two points both times. The Blugolds won the second set 25-23 and the third 27-25.

Eau Claire now moves to 10-8, 2-0 in WIAC play. Elmhurst and Millikin are now 15-1 and 12-7, respectively.

The Blugolds will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 2 when they travel to UW-La Crosse. The match will begin at 7 p.m.
