Indoor Track & Field to Compete at Platteville Saturday

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire men's and women's indoor track & field teams will compete at UW-Platteville this Saturday in their first meet on the road this season.

Last Saturday the Blugolds hosted an alumni meet in the Ade Olson Addition of the McPhee Physical Education Center. At the opening meet, the men and women combined to take first place in 22 events.

In the men's competition, Tony Sigrist (Jr.-Byron, Minn.) and Kirk Schmidt (Sr.-Athens, Wis.) both reached NCAA Division III provisional qualifying marks in field events.

Sigrist, who competed at last year's NCAA Championship in the 35-pound weight throw, finished with a distance of 17.70 meters (58-1) at this year's alumni meet. He also did well in the shot put as he won by more than a foot.

Also at the alumni meet, Schmidt finished with a provisional qualifying mark in the long jump with a distance of seven meters (22-11.75).

Returners that competed at indoor nationals for the men last year are Sigrist and Patrick Mackin (Jr.-Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy), who participated on the distance medley relay team that finished with All-American honors.

For the women, there are three members back from last year's indoor national squad. Brittany Frederick (Jr.-Green Bay, Wis./Preble) competed in two field events last year while Alyssa Sybilrud (Jr.-Savage, Minn./Burnsville) and Maria Peloquin (Sr.-Prescott, Wis.) competed on the distance medley relay team that took second place at the national meet.

At this year's alumni meet, Frederick took the top spot in the weight throw, tossing it nearly eight feet further than the second place finisher. She finished with a distance of 15.32 meters (50-3.25), just shy of a national provisional qualifying distance.

As a team a season ago, the Blugold women finished in second place in the WIAC and in 15th at nationals. The men were fifth in the conference and tied for 55th at nationals.
