Women's Tennis Shut Out Falcons on the Road

RIVER FALLS, WI (blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's tennis team was back on the road for Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play on Sunday with a trip to UW-River Falls to face off with the Falcons. After competitive matches in doubles play, the UW-Eau Claire Blugolds swept the Falcons, 9-0, and improve to 3-1 on the year.

Results

Coming off a 9-0 sweep if UW-Stout just days before, the Blugolds kept their momentum rolling into Sunday's matches. Clare Palen (Jr. – Rochester, MN/Lourdes) and Samantha Fuchs (Sr. – DeForest, WI) captured the 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles to give UWEC the 1-0 lead. Morgan Nelson (Jr. – Beaver Dam, WI) and Anna Lee (Fr. – Buffalo, MN) fought for the 8-6 win at No. 2 to keep Eau Claire in the lead. Sophie Geske (So. – Rochester, MN/John Marshall) and Sydney Presler (Sr. – Eau Claire, WI/Altoona) rounded out No. 3 doubles play with a hard fought 8-6 victory as well.

In singles play, Palen, Fuchs, and Nelson were victorious in their matches, all winning within two sets. Morgan Dekan (So. – Altoona, WI) secured a comeback victory at No. 4 singles. After dropping the first set 6-2, Dekan powered back with a 6-3 and 10-7 tiebreaker win. Liv Herzog (Fr. – Owatonna, MN) and Téa Armstrong (So. – Blue Earth, MN) also came out on top in the No. 5 and 6 singles matches, respectively.

The Blugolds (3-1, WIAC 3-1) will be stepping away from WIAC play next week as they prepare for the ITA Regional Tournament that runs from Friday, September 23rd to Monday, September 26th. The ITA Tournament is hosted by Gustavus Adolphus College at the Swanson Tennis Center in St. Peter, MN.
