Soccer earns big win to open WIAC play

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's soccer team opened Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play Saturday with a big win over UW-Platteville.

The Blugolds scored early and often, mounting a 5-0 lead in the first half.

Emily Sullivan (So. – Medina, MN/Wayzata) got things rolling for UW-Eau Claire, scoring the first and second goals. The first came only two minutes in and the second coming in the 14th minute.

Hannah Schaetzel (Fr. – Germantown, WI) added the third Blugold goal in the 18th minute off a Danielle Jensen (Sr. – Mukwonago, WI) assist.

Mercedes Wilson (Fr. – Dousman, WI/Kettle Moraine) found the back of the net less than a minute later to bring the lead to 4-0.

Hannah Jacobson (Jr. Eagan, MN) joined the scoring party on an unassisted goal in the 36th minute as the Blugolds took a commanding 5-0 lead into the half.

Eau Claire cruised through the second have to earn the victory. The Blugolds outshot the Pioneers 31-5, including 19 shots on goal.

Sammie Lefaive (Sr. – Coon Rapids, MN) earned the complete-game shutout in goal, recording three saves.

The Blugolds (4-4-1, 1-0 WIAC) will be back in action Wednesday, Oct. 4 as they travel to St. Peter, Minn. to take on Gustavus Adolphus College. Catch all the action Blugold Game Day.
