Soccer comes up short against Wartburg

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - The University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire women's soccer team continued with non-conference play Thursday as they hosted the Wartburg College Knights. Despite getting an early 1-0 lead, the Knights scored two unanswered goals to take the 2-1 win.

Box Score

The Blugolds started early, after a Wartburg foul inside the box awarded Eau Claire with a penalty kick. Emily Sullivan (So.-Medina, MN) would get the call to take the shot and she would capitalize. Even though Wartburg's goalkeeper dove to the correct side, Sullivan would tuck it into the right corner and give Eau Claire the lead.

With injuries forcing many Blugolds to the sidelines, the starting line-up saw seven freshman, and according to Head Coach Sean Yengo, "the first half was probably one of the better halves [we've played] all year."

Eau Claire and Wartburg were tied at one after the half, but the second half did not favor the Blugolds the same way as the first. They gave up a lone goal early and just could not find the back of the net. Even though the Blugolds outshot the opposition, the ball would just not roll their way.

The Blugolds will take to the road Sunday as they head to Minnesota to take on Concordia-Moorhead. Follow all the action on Blugold Game Day.
