Daniel, Fleetwood, Schoenfelder Win Titles at Roger Williams Invitational

BRISTOL, R.I. (blugolds.com) — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire wrestling team participated in the Roger Williams Invitational on Saturday at Roger Williams University. Alfred Daniel (Sr. - Manhattan, N.Y./St. Benedict's), Tyler Fleetwood (Jr. - Fulton, Ill.) and Niall Schoenfelder (So. - Antioch, Ill.) all won championships to lead the Blugolds, who finished second in the team standings.

Results

Fleetwood was the 133-pound champion, Daniel won the 165-pound weight class, and Schoenfelder was the winner at 184 pounds. Fleetwood was the No. 2 seed in his bracket and won by tech fall, decision and major decision to advance to the finals. He won by forfeit in the championship.

Daniel and Tristan Massie (Jr. - Hillsdale, Wis./Barron) both wrestled at 165 for the Blugolds, and both won their first several matches to advance to the finals. Daniel was the victor by forfeit in the championship. He reached the finals by winning four times, with two victories by decision, one by fall and one by major decision. Massie's road to the finals featured two wins by decision and another by fall.

Schoenfelder was seeded fourth in his bracket. The sophomore won once by twice by decision and once by major decision to advance to the finals, where he defeated Johnson & Wales' Ryan DeVivo in a 9-2 decision to win the title.

Like Massie, Jared Stricker (So. - Ashland, Wis.) was a runner-up in his weight class. Stricker went 3-1 at 174 pounds, advancing to the finals with two falls and a decision.

Jake Matthews (So. - Addison Trail, Ill.) placed third at 141 pounds. He reached the semifinals of the championship bracket after three wins via fall, and came back to win the third-place match. Zach Sato (So. - Oswego, Ill.) and Sam Melton (Jr. - Shell Lake, Wis./Spooner) both placed fourth; Sato at 149 pounds and Melton at 197 pounds. Carter Schulz (Fr. - Rice Lake, Wis.) finished fifth at 125 pounds.

Drew Kested (Fr. - Sterling, Ill.), Connor Collins (Jr. - Oshkosh, Wis./Oshkosh West) and Jackson Schichel (Jr. - Hastings, Minn.) all placed sixth: Kested at 141 pounds, Collins at 184 and Schichel at 285.

The Blugolds had 15 wrestlers entered in the tournament. They accumulated 150.5 team points, finishing only behind Castleton in the team standings.

UW-Eau Claire hosts its first home dual of the season on Thursday, Nov. 17 against UW-Oshkosh. The Chancellor's Cup is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at the McPhee Center.
