Blugolds Compete at Yellowjacket Open

ROCHESTER, Minn. (blugolds.com) — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire wrestling team competed in its first tournament of the season on Saturday. The Blugolds traveled west to participate in the Yellowjacket Open.

In the open divisions, Alfred Daniel (Sr. - Manhattan, N.Y./St. Benedict's) reached the consolation semifinal at 165 pounds. Daniel won his opening match in the consolation bracket with a 12-4 major decision.

UW-Eau Claire also entered several wrestlers in the freshman/sophomore divisions. Reid Lawrence (So. - Hugo, Minn./Mahtomedi) was the top finisher, taking second place at 165 pounds. Lawrence went 4-1, scoring two tech falls and a decision to advance to the semifinals. He advanced to the championship when his semifinal opponent forfeited. Preston Carlisle (Fr. - Red Wing, Minn./Cannon Falls) placed fourth at 174. Carlisle won his first two matches by fall to advance to the semifinals, and secured fourth place after dropping in the semifinals and third-place match.

Several Blugolds finished in sixth place in the freshman/sophomore divisions. Ryan Goddard (Fr. - Oswego, Ill.), Jon Harvey (Fr. - Lake City, Minn./Lincoln) and Carter Melton (Fr. - Spooner, Wis.) reached the fifth-place match at 125, 165 and 184 pounds, respectively. Carter Schulz (Fr. - Rice Lake, Wis.), Markus Brown (So. - Iron River, Wis./Northwestern), Jan Hernandez-Soto (So. - Minneapolis, Minn./Patrick Henry) and Carter Friend (Fr. - Whitewater, Wis.) placed eighth at 125, 149 and 157, respectively. All three reached the consolation semifinals in their weight class.

In all, the Blugolds had 23 wrestlers compete. UW-Eau Claire returns to action at the Johnson & Wales Duals on Friday, Nov. 11, in Providence, Rhode Island.
