PLATTEVILLE, Wis. (blugolds.com) – After upsetting UW-Platteville last season, the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire wrestling team fell just short on Saturday. The Blugolds dropped a close dual to the No. 15-ranked Pioneers by a score of 23-17.

All it would have taken would have been for a swing match or two to go the Blugolds way, but this time around, it was the Pioneers' day. In a dual that both teams won five matches, the difference was that Platteville picked up bonus points in three straight matches with pins at heavyweight and 125-pounds and a technical fall at 133-pounds.

Eau Claire got wins in the form of three close decisions and two major decisions to end the match. Hunter DeLeon (So.-Anoka, MN) kicked off the afternoon with a 7-4 victory at 157-pounds. Returning to the lineup, Seth Vosters (So.-Freedom, WI) followed that up with a 5-1 decision at 165-pounds. The final decision came from Vosters' high school teammate, Ramsey Bloy (Jr.-Freedom, WI). The 197-pounder took a tight 2-0 win to regain the lead for the Blugolds at the midway point.

After the intermission, the Pioneers went on that big three-match stretch before Jordan Meyer (So.-Evansville, WI) and Carter Focht (Sr.-Pine Springs, MN/Mahtomedi) concluded the dual with their major decisions. Meyer defeated his opponent, 12-1, while Focht won 13-1.

The Blugolds will attempt to get back to .500 in the conference standings on Wednesday. They host UW-Stevens Point at 7:00 p.m. Last season, Eau Claire topped the Pointers for the first time since 1986.
