Gymnasts Open Season Strong with Win

WINONA, Minn. (Blugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire women's gymnastics team opened the 2011 campaign strong with a 175.675-174.600 victory over Winona State University at Talbot Gymnasium tonight.

On the way to Eau Claire defeating Winona in a dual meet for the first time since February 19, 2005, three different Blugolds took top honors on the vault, uneven bars and balance beam.

Sarah Hulbert (Sr.-Waukesha, Wis./North) took the top spot on the vault with a score of 9.350 while Claire Johnson (So.-Eagan, Minn.) won the uneven bars with a score of 9.050, a career-best.

On the balance beam, Olivia Aschenbrenner (Fr.-Cedarburg, Wis./Grafton) won with a mark of 9.525 while Cece Solem (So.-Mendota Heights, Minn./Henry Sibley) was second with a 9.350.

Michaela McCamey (Fr.-Dayton, Ohio/Homeschooled) had the Blugolds' best finish in the floor exercise, scoring an 8.900 to take third while she was second in the all-around with a mark of 34.775.

Danielle Schulzetenberg (So.-Maple Grove, Minn.) also scored in the all-around, taking third place with a mark of 33.850.

Up next for Eau Claire will be the UW-Eau Claire Invite, next Friday at 6 p.m. in the McPhee Physical Education Center.
