Blugold Track & Field Teams Earn National Academic Awards

NEW ORLEANS, La. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire men's indoor and outdoor track & field teams have been named the 2012 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Scholar Teams of the Year in Division III while the women's team, along with a number of individuals, were also recognized with academic honors.

In addition to the men's teams being named the Scholar Teams of the Year with a cumulative team GPA of 3.22, Tyler Genovese (Sr.-Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) earned recognition as the indoor field Scholar Athlete of the Year in Division III.

At the NCAA Indoor Championships, the Blugolds finished as the national runner-up, scoring 37 points to place just behind champion North Central (Ill.). Genovese was the national champion in the weight throw. At the outdoor national meet, Eau Claire placed sixth overall. Genovese placed second in the discus and fifth in the hammer to help the team to 30 points.

Genovese was one of eight on the men's squad to earn All-Academic honors. The others were:

On the women's side, the team was one of 137 teams to earn All-Academic status. Additionally, 10 individuals received All-Academic honors. Named to the team were:

Steph Sjostrom (Jr.-Champlin, Minn./Park)

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 and have met an NCAA automatic or provisional qualifying mark in an individual or relay event at some point in either indoor or outdoor seasons. Participation in an NCAA Championship also fulfills the athletic component of All-Academic qualification.
