St. Peter, Minn. (Blugolds.com)- The University of Wisconsin Eau Claire women's tennis team competed at the United States Tennis Association/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Regional Championships at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn over the weekend.
Natalie Wijesinghe (Apple Valley, Minn.) earned her way to the semi-finals at the United State Tennis Association/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Region Championships. As the #4 seed in the singles draw, Wijesinghe fineshed 5-1 at the three-day event. The sophomore had a first round bye and defeated Hamilton(Grinnell) 7-5, 6-3 in the second round. She defeated Solberg (Concordia Wis.) and #13 seed Valentine (Gustavus) before dispatching No. 15 seed Bridgid McGuire of UW-Whitewater 6-3, 7-6 (6) to advance to the semi-finals. Wijesinghe was bested by Jillian Wallace of UW-Whitewater 6-3, 7-5 in the semi-final.
Senior, Sarah Henderson (Prior Lake,Minn.) had another good showing the regional singles draw tournament. Henderson had a first round bye, and defeated Frommer (Carthage) 7-6, 6-7, 10-3 in the round of 64, and Thome (Cornell) in the round of 32. With the win over Thome she advanced to the round of 16, and was defeated by to Zoe Park (Carleton) 7-6,6-1.
Wijesinghe and Henderson entered the doubles regional as the #2 seed. After a first round bye the duo defeated Sullivan/Martin (Gustavus) 8-2 in the second round followed by an 8-1 victory over Yim/Yim (Carleton)in the third. Wijesinghe and Henderson went on to earn an 8-6 win over Hindt/Novak (Bethel) to advance to the semi-final. The pair was defeated in the semi-final by Belissimo/Spahn (UW-La Crosse).
At the Gustie Fall Invite Hannah Zevenbergen (Baldwin, Wis./Baldwin Woodville) was the singles draw #1 champion. Zevenbergen defeated Dean(Edgewood) 6-2, 6-1 in the championship match and was 4-0 on the weekend. In doubles play at the Gustie Fall Invite Kendra Berry (Duluth, MN/East) and Hannah Koch (Duluth, Minn/East) were draw #4 champions. The pair had a first round bye and then defeated Hautzinger/Guan(Grinnell) 9-7, and rolled past Prokosch/Otteson(St. Olaf) 8-1 to advance to the doubles draw #4 championship. Berry and Koch defeated Fink/Rice(St. Scholastica) 8-5 in the championship match.
The Blugolds will host conference rival UW-River Falls on October 4th at 2:00pm
