St. Peter, Minn. (Blugolds.com)- The University of Wisconsin Eau Claire men's tennis team opened up their 2017-18 season at the United States Tennis Association/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Regional Championships and the Midwest Open at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn over the weekend.

Zach Janssen (Green Bay, Wis. / Notre Dame) entered the regional as the #17 seed in singles play. The sophomore defeated Nelson (Coe) in the first round of 128, winning, 6-2, 6-3. He made quick work of Dzurisin (Cornell) in the round of 64, but was defeated by #7 seed Whaling (GAC) in the round of 32. Andrew Dahl (Fort Atkinson, Wis), Daniel Schoen (Brookfield, Wis. /Central), and Renan Barros (Itajai, Santa Catarina, Brazil) all made it through the first round of 128 in the regional but were all defeated in the round of 64.
The Blugolds had three doubles team compete in the doubles regional that had a field of 64. The duo of Dahl/Janssen earned an 8-3 win over Hart/Wolfe (UST) in the first round and were defeated in the round of 32 by #6 seed Abban/Moore (Carthage). August Badura (Oconomowoc, Wis.) and doubles partner Barros were victorious over Varma/Vossen(UST) in the first round, but fell to the #8 seed in the second round.
Several Blugolds had sucessful showings at the Midwest Open this weekend. In singles play first year men's tennis player Grant Mauthe was the singles draw champion. Mauthe went 7-0 on the weekend and is the 2nd player in 17 years to win the Midwest Open Championship. Mauthe defeated Ridgway (BU) in the round of 128 with scores; 6-1, 6-3 and then was victorious over Gadke (CSS) 7-6, 6-1 in the round of 64. He earned a round of 32 win over Trefilek (Carroll) and a round of 16 win over Wilson (MAC). Mauthe won his round of 8 match over Leach (STO) 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the singles quarter finals. He defeated Wick (STO) in his quarter final match and was victorious over Haugen (GAC) in the championship match with scores of 6-4, 6-3.Jordan Stephenson advanced to the round of 8 before being defeated by Haugen (GAC). Stephenson defeated Johnson(BLC) 6-0, 6-0 in the first round, and followed that performance up with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Loken(STO) in the round of 64. He went on to earn a 6-7, 6-3 (10-3) win over Long (LC) in the round of 32 and had a come back win over Nykforuk (Carthage) in the round of 16. Also with great opening weekends, Adam Burk and Dane Steidl (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis. / Lincoln.) both advanced to the round of 16 in the Midwest Open.
At the Midwest Open doubles tournament, the pair of Steidl and Burk advanced to the round of 8 before falling to Lindholm-Uzzi/ Zweifel (Carleton). The pair had a first round bye, and earned a 8-1 victory in the sendond round. In the third round the duo defeated Leach/Fredje-Johnston (STO) 8-5 to advance to the round of 8.
