Women’s Cross Country earns back-to-back WIAC Conference Championship titles

Colfax, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – It was another successful day for the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's cross country team. The women competed at the WIAC Championships (presented by Culver's) on Saturday at Whitetail Golf Course in Colfax, WI.

The Blugolds won the meet with a score of 39 points. The top seven women also earned all-conference honors.

Sam Slattery (Jr. – Waunakee, WI/Waunakee) led the way for the Blugolds, she finished 2nd with a time of 21:49.6. Slattery earned 1st team all-conference honors.

Morgan Marek (Sr. – Muskego, WI/Muskego) and Lexie Tremble (Jr. – Muskego, WI/Muskego) were the next Blugolds to finish. Marek placed 4th with a time of 22:11.1 and earned 1st team all-conference honors. Tremble placed 8th with a time of 22:41.8 and earned 2nd team all-conference honors.

Naomi Long (Fr. – Medina, MN/Wayzata) placed 12th with a time of 22:54.5. Long also earned 2nd team all-conference honors. The next finisher for the Blugolds was Emma Drangstveit (So. – Lakeville, MN/Lakeville North) who placed 13th with a time of 22:57.2 earning 2nd team all-conference honors.

Rounding out the top 7 were Emily Jaeger (Sr. – Fall Creek, WI/Fall Creek) and Alanna Huggett (So. – Marshall, WI/Marshall High School). Jaeger finished 17th with a time of 23:07.1. Jaeger earned all-conference honorable mention.

Jaeger felt her race went well and that Saturday was a strong showing for the team.

"I feel really excited and I feel proud of my effort," Jaeger said. "I feel like the team finally really got to show where we're at physically and show off our fitness a little bit and I'm proud of everyone."

Huggett finished 20th with a time of 23:14.0 and earned all-conference honorable mention. Huggett was also named to the WIAC Sportsmanship Team.

Head Coach Dan Schwamberger thought the Blugolds had a great performance on Saturday.

"Both the men and women ran very smart, finished strong and obviously the women winning, that's awesome," Schwamberger said.

It was an exciting day for the women's cross country team.

The Blugolds will be racing again next Saturday, November 2nd at the Luther Saga cup. The meet will take place at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.
