Four Blugolds Earn WIAC Athlete of the Week Honors

MADISON, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's cross country runner Katie Faris (Chippewa Falls, Wis), football player Carmelo Rosado (Beaver Dam,Wis.), men's swimmer Nicholas Meints (Parker,Colo./Ponderosa) and volleyball player Krista Meyer (Germantown, Wis.) have each been named Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Athletes of the Week, it was announced today by Assistant Commissioner of Media Relations Matt Stanek.

Faris won the City Wells 5K hosted by UW-Eau Claire at the Eau Claire Municipal Well Fields on Oct. 19. She ran a time of 19:42 to win by five seconds. Faris led the Blugolds to the meet victory with a nearly perfect score of 17. The women's cross country team will be racing again this next weekend, Saturday, October 27th, at the WIAC Conference Meet. The Blugolds host conference this year. The meet will be at Whitetail Golf Course in Colfax, WI.

Rosado totaled five tackles, a fumble recovery and tallied two interceptions in UW-Eau Claire’s 40-16 win over UW-Platteville on Oct. 20. His second interception of the day was returned 45 yards for a touchdown, which came early in the fourth quarter giving the Blugolds a 26-9 advantage with just under 14 minutes left to play. Rosado led the Blugold defense that finished with four interceptions, three fumble recoveries, six sacks and 10 tackles for a loss. The win was the first WIAC victory in two years for UW-Eau Claire and first over UW-Platteville since 2009. The football team travels to UW-River Falls on Oct. 27, kick-off set for 1:05pm. 

Meints finished second in both the 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard backstroke in UW-Eau Claire’s dual meet against UW-Stevens Point on Oct. 20. He also was a member of the third-place 200-yard medley relay team and second-place 200-yard freestyle relay squad. The swim and dive teams host Luther College on Friday October 26th. 

Meyer totaled 45 kills (3.0 per set), 21 blocks (1.4 per set), and 16 digs (1.07 per set), while compiling a .470 hitting percentage (45-6-83) to help the No. 14- ranked Blugolds to a 5-0 record during the week. She started the week with a team-best 12 kill, five block performance with a .455 hitting percentage and one service ace in UW-Eau Claire’s three-set victory over St. Norbert College (Wis.) on Oct. 16. In the Blugolds’ first game on Oct.19, she tallied nine kills (.444 hitting percentage) with four digs and three block in a 3-0 victory over Olivet College (Mich.). Later that day, Meyer posted nine kills (.643 hitting percentage) with six blocks and one service ace in UW-Eau Claire’s 3-0 win over Finlandia University (Mich.).  On Oct. 20, she had eight kills on a .636 hitting percentage with five digs and one block to help the Blugolds to a 3-0 triumph over Albion College (Mich.) and then capped off the week with a seven kill, six block, and three dig performance in the UW-Eau Claire’s  3-0 sweep of Denison University (Ohio). The volleyball team is now 25-2 and travel to UW-Stout on Wednesday Oct. 24, and will finish WIAC play at home on Friday October 26th hosting UW-Whitewater at 7:00pm.
