Women’s Cross Country wins UWEC City Wells 5K; Faris is individual champion

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's cross country team raced at the UWEC City Wells 5k Invitation this past Friday. The Blugolds won the meet, scoring 17 points, a nearly perfect score.

Katie Faris (Fr. – Chippewa Falls, WI/Chippewa Falls) was the overall meet champion and finished first with a time of 19:42. Faris said the meet was a lot of fun and the team ran well on Friday.

"I was really happy about the race," Faris said. "The team ran really well too. I felt like this race was a really good confidence booster."

Following Faris was Rachel Hirsch (Jr. – Brookfield, WI/Brookfield Central) who finished 2nd with a time of 19:47. Rebecca Whipple (Sr. – Madison, WI/Madison West) finished 3rd with a time of 19:57. Grace Vogt (Fr. – Manitowoc, WI/Manitowoc Lutheran) placed 5th with a time of 20:00. Next to finish was Gina Behling (Fr. – Brookfield, WI/Brookfield East) in 6th with a time of 20:05.

Completing the top seven for the Blugolds were Heidi Wilken (So. – De Pere, WI/ De Pere High School) and Maggie Louiselle (So. – Saint Anthony, MN/Totino Grace). Wilken placed 7th with a time of 20:10 and Louiselle finished 8th with a time of 20:13.

Head Coach Dan Schwamberger was pleased and impressed with how the team raced on Friday. Schwamberger is looking forward to future races for the Blugolds.

"(The race) had me excited to see what's possible in the upcoming weeks," Schwamberger said.

The women's cross country team will be racing again this next weekend, Saturday, October 27th, at the WIAC Conference Meet. The Blugolds host conference this year. The meet will be at Whitetail Golf Course in Colfax, WI.
