Volleyball Falls at Nationally-Ranked UW-Stevens Point

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – Playing at 15th-ranked UW-Stevens Point, the UW-Eau Claire women's volleyball team dropped the conference match 3-0 at Berg Gymnasium tonight.

The Pointers won with scores of 25-10, 25-16 and 25-20 to improve to 14-4 on the season and 2-1 in the WIAC. The Blugolds fall to 9-11 overall and 1-2 in conference play.

In the opening set, Stevens Point jumped out to a 6-0 lead and while the Blugolds got back to within five (7-2), that was as close as they would get as the Pointers used a few more runs to steadily increase their lead.

In the second set, the Blugolds led just once at 2-1 while the score was tied three other times. After Stevens Point got up 12-6, Eau Claire went on a 4-0 run to get back to within two but the Pointers outscored the Blugolds 13-6 the rest of the way.

The third set was played much tighter. The final set started off similar to how the second set began but the Blugolds hung right with the Pointers until a 17-17 tie. Stevens Point then went on a 6-0 run it was too much for the Blugolds to overcome.

As a team, the Blugolds hit a season-low .064, tying a season low 23 kills with 16 errors. Stevens Point finished with 45 kills and 14 errors, hitting .242.

Alexis Wong (Sr.-Maple Grove, Minn.) led the Blugolds in kills with six while Jamie Dimka (Jr.-Wausau, Wis./East) led the match with 22 digs. Jenna Smits (Jr.-Green Bay, Wis./Preble) had a team-high 18 set assists while Kelly Riesgraf (Jr.-Chaska, Minn.) led the Blugolds with one solo block and three block assists.

The Blugolds will be off this weekend and will next play Tuesday, October 7 at the University of Northwestern-St. Paul (Minn.) for a match beginning at 7 p.m.
