Volleyball Splits on First Day of Home-Opener

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – Competing for the first time at home this season, the UW-Eau Claire women's volleyball team split on the first day of the 2014 Sandy Schumacher Memorial Tournament in the McPhee Physical Education Center.

The Blugolds opened the day against 20th-ranked University of St. Thomas (Minn.) with a 3-0 loss (25-22, 25-16, 25-19) and then defeated Carroll University 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-16) to end the day.

Against the Tommies, the Blugolds hit just .114 with 27 kills while St. Thomas hit .254 with 44 kills. The Blugolds led in blocking with six and had five service aces while the Tommies recorded 4.5 blocks and two service aces.

Leading the Blugolds was Alexis Wong (Sr.-Maple Grove, Minn.) with eight kills while Jamie Dimka (Jr.-Wausau, Wis./East) had 19 digs to lead Eau Claire. Jenna Smits (Jr.-Green Bay, Wis./Preble) totaled 21 set assists to lead the match.

Facing the Pioneers, Eau Claire hit .290, the second highest total in a match this season, and finished with 44 kills. Carroll totaled 25 kills and hit .058. Eau Claire also had six service aces and four total blocks.

Megan Tracy (Sr.-New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper) led the team in kills with 12 after hitting .500 while Wong added 10 kills. Dimka again led the team in digs with 18 and Smits finished with a match-high 41 set assists.

The Blugolds are now 6-9 on the season.

Tomorrow the Blugolds will wrap up the tournament, taking on Concordia-Moorhead (Minn.) at 10 a.m., followed by St. Norbert at 2:30 p.m.
