EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (blugolds.com) - The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire wrestling team hosted the 2017 edition of the Don Parker Open on Saturday afternoon. While the Blugolds started off the day strong, resulting in eight wrestlers placing for the team in a very tough tournament, they did not quite have the finish they hoped for, with only two of those eight getting wins in the final round.
The Blugolds top place-winner on the day was Zackary Sirny (Sr.-Wild Rose, WI), who went 3-1 on the afternoon but was topped in overtime in the 125-pound finals by Luther's Connor Murphy.
Sirny's respective bookend and senior counterpart, Justin Karkula (Sr.-Oshkosh, WI/West), had an excellent day, taking third and going 5-1 with two falls. His only defeat came at the hands of the eventual champion, University of Minnesota's Rylee Streifel in the quarterfinals.
Jordan Meyer (Fr.-Evansville, WI) picked up a pair of wins on the day and took fourth place at 141-pounds.
Earning fifth place on the day, Connor Hanson (Jr.-Harmony, MN/Fillmore Central) won in overtime over Augsburg's Bryce Zdanovec in his final match, one of four victories for the 157-pounder.
Three wrestlers placed sixth; those being Cody Vogel (Fr.-Elkhorn, WI/East Troy) at 133-pounds, Carter Focht (Jr.-Pine Springs, MN/Mahtomedi) at 149-pounds, and Cecil Philson (Jr.-Thorp, WI) at 197-pounds. Vogel went 2-2 with a major decision and pinfall victory. Focht went 3-3 including a loss to the eventual champion, Ryan Epps (Augsburg). Philson also posted a 3-3 record, highlighted by a major decision win and overtime victory in his first two rounds.
Finally, despite an impressive 4-2 mark on the day, Tyler Vogt (Jr.-Owatonna, MN) walked away with an eighth place finish. Vogt earned two tech falls and a pinfall among those four wins.
Being that it was an open tournament, it is also worth noting that assistant coaches Elroy Perkin and Cedric Gibson laced up the wrestling shoes once again and got in on the action. Perkin was crowned the champion of the 157-pound weight class, while Gibson took second at 165-pounds.
The postseason has officially arrived now, as the Blugolds will take part in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championships in Platteville on Friday, February 10. Wrestling is set to begin at noon.
