Wrestling starts season with 2 wins

LINCOLN, Neb. (Blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire wrestling team started their 2016-17 campaign with two wins on Saturday, a 37-6 win over Nebraska Wesleyan and 19-16 win over Dubuque University.

Several Blugolds earned two wins on the day and were led  by Marcus Blount-McKinley (So. – Rochester, MN/Mayo) who earned two pins on the day at 165 pounds. The sophomore pinned Neb. Wesleyan's Shane Buck and Dubuque's Stetson Clary.

Zackary Sirny (Sr. – Wild Rose, WI) recorded a 10-5 win over Neb. Wesleyan's Ryan Smales 10-5 and 13-2 win over Dubuque's Javier Guillen while Tyler Vogt (Jr. – Owatonna, MN) defeated Matthew Fricke by technical fall, 19-2, and defeated Dubuque's Pat Mooney, 12-4.

Robert Rocole (Sr. – Lakewood, WI/Wabeno) and Jordan Meyer (Fr. – Evansville, WI) also recorded pins for Eau Claire, defeating Alex Kerr (1:39) and Kendrick Fraiser (1:23), respectively.

Also tallying wins over Neb. Wesleyan were Connor Hanson (Jr. – Harmony, MN/Fillmore Central) who defeated Dustin Monroe, 17-6; Carter Focht (Jr. – Pine Springs, MN/Mahtomedi) over Mitchell Hunt, 4-3; and Cody Vogel (Fr. – Elkhorn, WI/East Troy) over Jorge Hernandez, 12-4.

Against Dubuque, Travis Cripe (Sr. – Eden Prairie, MN) defeated Roosevelt Smith, 4-2, and Justin Karkula (Sr. – Oshkosh, WI/West) defeated Jordan Hill 4-3 to seal the victory.

The Blugolds will be back in action for their home opener on Wednesday, November 9th against St. Olaf. The dual will get underway at 7 p.m.
