OSHKOSH, Wis. (blugolds.com) – In what is quickly becoming a must-see event on the schedule, the second annual Chancellor's Cup did not disappoint yet again this year. The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire wrestling team was victorious over UW-Oshkosh in the inaugural event last year, but the Oshkosh Titans topped the Blugolds in a very close dual Tuesday night to even the series.

The match with the Titans came down to heavyweight with the Blugolds needing a pin to win. While Justin Karkula (Sr.-Oshkosh, WI/West) was victorious in the return to his hometown, previous matches in the night where the Blugolds were either unable to score bonus points or gave up late scores proved to be too much to overcome.

Oshkosh won the dual by a tight score of 18-16 even though the two teams each won five matches. With the win, the Titans take control of the Chancellor's Cup for the year to come, making next season's rubber match a key match-up between two programs on the rise.

Also victorious for the Blugolds on the night was 125-pounder Zackary Sirny (Sr.-Wild Rose, WI), who earned a 9-4 decision and remained unbeaten on the season. Cody Vogel (Fr.-Elkhorn, WI/East Troy) followed Sirny up with a 13-5 major decision win. A big takedown to his opponent's back late in the third period secured the victory.

Jordan Meyer's (Fr.-Evansville, WI) lateral drop in the first period of his match played out to be quite important as he opened up to a 10-1 lead. Oshkosh's Dellas Vandenberg fought back late in the third, but Meyer held him off for a 17-10 win.

Finally, Tyler Vogt (Jr.-Owatonna, MN) picked up a 7-1 decision at 174 pounds to round out the Blugolds wins.

The defeat was the first loss for the Blugolds in this early part of the 2016-17 season. They will look to rebound on Thursday night when they hit the road again for another conference match-up with UW-La Crosse.
