PLATTEVILLE, Wis. (blugolds.com) - The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire wrestling team took part in the 2017 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Wrestling Championships (presented by Culver's) on Friday. The team finished in fifth place in the standings, but it certainly was a successful day in the sense that eight wrestlers were place winners.
The Blugolds were as high as third place at one point, with six wrestlers in the semi-finals and three of those reaching the finals. Of the UW-Eau Claire finalists, perhaps the most impressive performance of the tournament went to Toby Mosley (So.-Sparta, WI). The 165-pounder went 3-1 on the day and nearly took out the defending national champion, Logan Hermsen, in the championship. Mosley lost 6-4 after losing by six to Hermsen a few weeks ago.
Zackary Sirny (Sr.-Wild Rose, WI) and Cecil Philson (Jr.-Thorp, WI) also earned second place finishes. Sirny, who was named to the WIAC All-Sportsmanship Team, went 2-1 and was defeated in the 125-pound first place match by No. 7-ranked Zac Denny. Philson finished 2-1 as well, losing to top-seeded Michael Otomo for the conference title.
The Blugolds had two wrestlers finish third in Carter Focht (Jr.-Pine Springs, MN/Mahtomedi) at 149-pounds and Justin Karkula (Sr.-Oshkosh, WI/West) at heavyweight. Focht (an impressive 4-1 on the day) and Hunter DeLeon (Fr.-Anoka, MN) finished third and fourth, with DeLeon's big highlight coming in the form of dominating the 2-seed John Broughton in the quarterfinals. Karkula picked up three wins in the tournament and only fell to the eventual champion, Donny Ralston.
Finally, Connor Hanson (Jr.-Harmony, MN/Fillmore Central) earned a fifth place finish in the 157-pound bracket, while Jacob Olson (Fr.-Isanti, MN/Cambridge-Isanti) made his 184-pound debut and finished in sixth place.
The next time the Blugolds compete will be at the Regional Championships in Moorhead, Minn. in two weeks. On February 25, the UW-Eau Claire wrestlers will attempt to punch their tickets to the national tournament.
