STEVENS POINT, Wis. (Blugolds.com)- The University of Eau Claire wrestling team competed in the WIAC championships, with several Blugolds having successful days as the team finished fifth overall.
Roy Munroe (Sr.- Cadott, WI) had a great tournament, finishing in 2nd place in the 149-pound weight class. Munroe took down Greg Osborn of UW-Platteville by fall (1:18) in the opening match. He then got wins over Joey Seitz of UW-Stevens Point by 15-0 technical fall and Maxx Hubbard of UW-Whitewater with an 11-6 decision, to advance to the championship match.
Also having a good day was Justin Karkula (Jr.- Oshkosh, WI/West). Karkula notched wins over Elijah Burdick of UW-Oshkosh by a 13-3 major decision and Dominic Gunderson of UW-Stevens Point by fall (3:28). By defeating Donny Ralston of UW-Stevens Point by a 3-2 decision in his final match, Karkula took 3rd place.
Two other Blugolds who placed on the day were Cecil Philson (So. - Thorp, WI), who finished in 6th place and Zackary Sirny (Jr.- Wild Rose, WI) who took 4th.
The Blugolds return to action for the NCAA Division III regionals on February 27.
