Men's Indoor Track & Field Finishes 14th at Nationals

BEXLEY, Ohio (Blugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire men's indoor track & field team captured its best finish since 2002, finishing in 14th place at the 2011 NCAA Division III Championships, hosted by Capital University.

Eau Claire scored 12 points to take 14th. North Central College (Ill.) won the national title with 45 points while Central College (Iowa) was second with 44. UW-La Crosse finished third with 43 points and UW-Oshkosh was fourth with 42. UW-Whitewater and UW-Stevens Point tied for 10th with 14 points.

The Blugolds competed in just two events today but both individuals finished with All-American honors.

Bart Mestelle (Jr.-Sun Prairie, Wis.) recorded a seventh-place finish in the pentathlon with a score of 3,522. He finished 10th or better in all five of the pentathlon's events.

In the 5,000-meter run, Tom Breitbach (Jr.-Muskego, Wis.) was eighth with a time of 14:33.59, his best time of the season. 

Yesterday the Blugolds also had two All-American finishes. The distance medley relay team took eighth while Tony Sigrist (Jr.-Byron, Minn.) had the Blugolds' best result at the championships, recording a national runner-up finish in the weight throw.

The Blugolds' outdoor season will get underway April 2 at the Wartburg Select meet in Waverly, Iowa.
