Two Blugolds Named WIAC Athletes of the Week

MADISON, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - UW-Eau Claire men's hockey goalie Brandon Stephenson (So.-Saline, Mich.) and men's track & field member Tom Breitbach (Jr.-Muskego, Wis.) have been named Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Athletes of the Week, WIAC Assistant Commissioner for Media Relations Matt Stanek announced today.

Stephenson helped the Blugolds to two shutout wins during the weekend to end the regular season. He stopped 26 shots Feb. 11, as the Blugolds beat College of St. Scholastica (Minn.) 3-0 and saved 27 shots Feb. 12, in a 3-0 victory at UW-Superior. He has not allowed a goal in his last 132 minutes on the ice. Stephenson improved to 11-5-1 on the season with the two victories.

Competing at the UW-Platteville Invitational, Breitbach hit a NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time as he won the 5,000-meter run. He not only paced the field, but shattered the facility record. Breitbach recorded a time of 14:35.77, over eight seconds faster than the Platteville venue's previous fast time set in 2000 by UW-Eau Claire's Dan Schwamberger. Breitbach's time also approached the conference record of 14:33.00, set in 1988 by former Blugold Dan Held.
