SUPERIOR, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - The No. 7 University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's hockey team completed their regular season sweep of UW-Superior with a 2-0 win on Friday night at Wessman Arena.
After a dominant win over UW-Superior at the end of January, the Blugolds recorded their first shutout of the season to complete the sweep thanks to a dominant performance from goaltender Jay Deo (Sr. – Langley, British Columbia).
After a scoreless first period that saw UW-Eau Claire lead in shots on goal 13-7, Garret Clemment (Sr. – Wausau, WI) gave the Blugolds a 1-0 lead just over five minutes into the middle frame for his 11th goal of the year. Patrick Moore (Sr. – Grand Rapids, MN) got his team leading 22nd assist of the year on the goal.
UW-Eau Claire would take the 1-0 lead into the second intermission.
The Blugolds would get the insurance goal they were looking for late in the third period on a goal scored by Colton Wolter (Jr. – Fairbanks, AK) to make it 2-0. Kyle Lee (Jr. – Wausau, WI) and Mac Jansen (Jr. – White Bear Lake, MN) earned the assists on the goal.
The Yellowjackets pulled goaltender Kyle Miller with one minute left to play, but the Blugolds kept the puck out of the back of the net to put the finishing touches on the 2-0 shutout.
Despite going 0-5 on the power play, the Blugolds had more than enough to earn the win committing only two penalties all game.
Deo started in net for the Blugolds for the 24th consecutive time of the season. The senior net minder recorded his first shutout of the season saving all 22 shots on goal. Deo got help from his defenseman who shut down passing lanes and blocked nine shots on the night.
The Blugolds (16-5-3) will now get ready for the final game of the regular season Saturday night against No. 4 UW-Stevens Point at Hobbs Ice Center.
