No. 5 Men's Hockey shut down by Auggies

By Justin Dade - Sports Information

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - The No. 5 University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's hockey team fell to the No. 11 Augsburg College Auggies 5-1 at Hobbs Ice Arena on Friday night.

Box Score

After splitting two games over in New York in the 2017 Pathfinder Tournament, the Blugolds looked a step behind the Auggies in the entirety of this one.

A check from behind on Blugolds' forward Patrick Moore (Sr. – Grand Rapids, MN) early in the first period gave UW-Eau Claire a critical five-minute man advantage to work with. The Auggies killed off the entire five minute major with active sticks and active bodies to swing the momentum their way.

Augsburg would later strike near halfway through the period on an off-speed shot from the slot by Ryan Cagnoni to give the Auggies the 1-0 advantage.

Erik Brenk made it a 2-0 advantage about two minutes later on a perfectly placed shot in the left corner.
A mishandled puck by a Blugold defenseman and goaltender Jay Deo (Langley, British Columbia) capped off a period UW-Eau Claire would like to forget made it 3-0 with 3:11 left.

Despite the 11-6 shots on goal advantage, the Blugolds would head into the first intermission trailing by three.
The second period didn't get much better for the UW-Eau Claire who looked out of sorts all night. Lucas Gillett made it 4-0 five minutes into the second period.
UW-Eau Claire got on the board on a nice shot from Colton Wolter (Jr. – Fairbanks, AK) to make it 4-1 just under two minutes later. Todd Koritzinsky (Jr. – Verona, WI) got the lone assist on Wolter's eighth goal of the season.
The Auggies would snatch away any potential shift in the momentum as they caught the Blugolds in a line change and Andy Faust extended the Augsburg lead to 5-1 at the 10:07 mark of the period.
The Blugolds would still lead in shots on goal (23-13) and face-off wins (22-16) despite the 5-1 deficit.

UW-Eau Claire was unable to get anything going in the final period as they would fall by a score of 5-1 for only their third loss of the season. The Blugolds are now 0-2 against the Auggies this season scoring just two goals total.

Deo played only the first two periods of this game giving up a season-high five goals on 13 shots on goal.

Goaltender David Johnson (Fr. - Bloomington, MN) saw his first action of his Blugold career playing the entire final period saving all of the 10 shots he saw.

The Blugolds (11-3-3) will look to rebound against another strong opponent tomorrow night at Hobbs Ice Arena taking in the St. Thomas Tommies (8-4-3). The puck will drop at 7 p.m.
