Women Place 2nd, Men 4th at WIAC Indoor Championships

MENOMINE, Wis (blugolds.com) - The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's and women's track and field teams finished competing at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships this Saturday afternoon. The women's team capped off an impressive showing by placing second overall as a team with 116 points scored over the two-day competition. The men finished fourth with 68.3 points.

Emma Gruen was the highest finishing Blugold in the heptathlon as she placed second in the heptathlon by scoring 3220 points. Also placing second was Hannah Zastrow (Jr. – Spencer, Wis.), who broke her own school record in the hurdles with an impressive time of 8.69s. Catie Fobbe (Sr. – Annandale, Minn./Maple Lake) rounded out her impressive meet by earning an all-conference honorable mention in the women's weight throw (17.60m).

On the men's side, senior Yakob Ekoue (Sr. – Hopkins, Minn.) earned himself some more hardware following his day 1 shot put victory by placing second in the weight throw with a toss of 18.26m. Earning an All-Conference Honorable Mention was Stefan Klechefksi (So. River Falls, Wis.) who ran a time of 6.86s in the 60m dash. Also placing third was Colin McClowry (So. Neenah, Wis.) in the 200m dash with a time of 22.13s. Junior Sam Verkerke (Jr. White Bear Township, Minn.) burst back onto the scene with an impressive third place finish in the 800m run (1:53.73s). The men's 4x400m relay placed third with a time of 3:21.78s.

The Blugolds will head down to Waverly, Iowa next weekend to compete in the Wartburg final qualifier meet next Saturday, the last meet before the NCAA Championships on March 10-11.
