WARTBURG, Iowa (blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's and women's track and field teams sent a small number of Blugolds down to Wartburg College this past weekend to compete in the Wartburg Final Qualifier Meet. Yakob Ekoue (Sr. - Hopkins, Minn.) finished his regular season off strong with wins in the shot put (17.75m) and weight throw (18.71m). Ekoue will go into the national meet next weekend as the second ranked shot putter in the nation, and the sixth ranked weight thrower. Joining Ekoue will be Catie Fobbe (Sr. - Annandale, Minn./Maple Lake), who placed second in both the shot put (14.22m) and weight throw (17.46m) at Wartburg. Fobbe is currently ranked first in the nation in the shot put for women, and she also boasts a ninth place ranking in the weight throw.
Heading into the final event of the men's heptathlon, Casey Chadwick (Sr. Poynette, Wis.) needed to run a huge personal record in the 1,000m run to qualify for the national meet. Chadwick did just that as he knocked 4 seconds off his lifetime best to finish with a time of 2:45.41s to achieve a personal record in the heptathlon with 4777 points. Casey will head into the national meet ranked seventeenth in the heptathlon. Carolyn Shult (Sr. Augusta, Wis) left it all out on the track as she ran a personal record to finish second in the mile run with a time of 4:57.46s. Shult will compete in the mile at the national meet next weekend.
