Three Blugolds headed to NCAA Wrestling Championship

MINNEAPOLIS (Blugolds.com) – Competing at the NCAA Upper Midwest Regional on Saturday, three Blugold wrestlers punched their ticket to the NCAA Championship.

The top three finishers in each weight class will advance to the 2020 NCAA Division III National Championships, which included Noah Carter (So. -Rochester, MN/Mayo), Jake Drexler (So. - Stratford) and Evan Lawrence (Jr. - Hugo, MN/Mahtomedi).

Leading the way for the Blugolds was Carter, who took second place at 285 pounds. Carter earned a sudden victory - 1 over Cole Fibranz (Chicago) (SV-1 7-5) in the semifinal but fell to Jordan Lemcke (Wis.-Oshkosh) in the title match in a tie breaker, (TB-1 3-1).

Drexler took third place at 149. He won by fall over Garrett Ruckdashel of Platteville (3:32) and followed that up with a 2-1 decision over Devin Tortorice of Whitewater. In the third place match, Drexler won by decision over Sam Wenzel of La Crosse (7-6).

At 174, Lawrence kept his season alive with a third place finish. He fell in his first bout but came back with a major decision win over Austin Stebane (Stevens Point) (MD 17-5) and in the third place match won by decision over Connor Williams (La Crosse), 10-6.

The trio will head to the national meet which will be held March 13-14 at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
