EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's hockey started the second half of their season Saturday, falling to Augsburg University 3-1 at Hobbs Ice Arena.
Augsburg jumped out to an early lead, scoring five minutes into the contest. The Blugolds would out-shot the Auggies 9-4 in the period but would not be able to light the lamp.
The second period would be a defensive battle as neither team could find the back of the net. Eau Claire again led in shots, 6-5.
The final period would have more offense, with Augsburg scoring their second goal of the night at 2:31. Eau Claire responded at 5:34, as Abby Roeser (So. – Cottage Grove, MN/East Ridge) found the back of the net off assists from Holly Turnbull (Jr. – Hayward, WI) and Sami Meister (So. – Plymouth, MN/Wayzata).
The Blugolds would get several more scoring opportunities, but couldn't get one past Auggie goaltender, Rebecca Sonnek. Augsburg would seal the win with an empty-net goal with just under two minutes remaining in the period.
The Blugolds out-shot the Auggies in the third period 11-6 and 26-15 for the game. Erin Connolly (Mequon, WI/Homestead) took the loss in goal, recording 12 saves on the night and falls to 6-3-2 on the season.
Eau Claire (7-4-2) will face Augsburg again Sunday in Minneapolis with the puck dropping at 2 p.m. Follow the action on Blugold Game Day.
