Blugolds Claim Four WIAC Athlete of the Week Honors

MADISON, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – UW-Eau Claire men's basketball player George Diekelman (Stevens Point, Wis. /SPASH), women's hockey goalie Erin Connolly (Mequon,Wis./ Homestead), gymnast Hannah Lewis (Saline, Mich.) and the 4x400 men’s indoor track relay of Aaron Zmolek,(Holmen, Wis.); KJ Munn (Bayport, Minn./St. Croix Preparatory Academy); Dietrich Schwoerer, (McFarland, Wis.); Hunter Henk,(Beldenville, Wis./River Falls) have all been named Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Athletes of the Week, it was announced today by Assistant Commissioner of Media Relations Matt Stanek.

Diekelman capped off his Blugold career with a game-winning lay-up with seven seconds remaining as the UW-Eau Claire men's basketball team defeated No. 19-ranked UW-Stevens Point, 55-54, on Feb. 17. In the upset, he scored 13 points and chipped in with three rebounds and three assists. On Feb. 14 at UW-River Falls, Diekelman had a game-high 20 points on 6-of-13 shooting, including 2-of-5 from behind the arc and 6-of-6 from the free throw line. For the week, he averaged 16.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists.

Gymnast, Hannah Lewis put together her best performance of the season in a dual at Winona State University (Minn.) on Feb. 15. She tied the school record on the uneven bars with a first-place score of 9.650. Lewis also scored a 9.225 on the floor exercise to finish eighth.The gymnastics team will host UW-Oshkosh on Friday February 23 at 6:00pm.

Women's hockey goalie, Erin Connolly, saved all 24 shots she saw in the Blugolds’ 3-0 win over No. 5-ranked UW-River Falls on Feb. 17. It was her fifth shutout of the season – the most in program history. Connolly has a .920 save percentage this season. With the win the Blugolds captured the No. 2 seed in the WIAC tournament and will host UW-Supeior on Friday and Saturday at Hobbs Ice Arena, both games will start at 3:00pm.

The 4x 400 relay team for the men's indoor track and field team took first place with a time of 3:17.65 at the UW-Oshkosh Titan Challenge on Feb. 17. The time leads the WIAC and is second in NCAA Division III. The foursome helped the Blugold team to finish 2nd overall at the event. The indoor track and field teams will compete at the WIAC conference meet at UW-Stevens Point on Feb. 23rd and 24th.
