SUPERIOR, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The No. 10 University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's hockey suffered their first loss of the season Friday night, falling to UW-Superior 3-2.
The Yellowjackets jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, scoring twice within the first 7 minutes of the game. They added their third goal at 5:37 in the second but the Blugold defense would hold them the rest of the way.
The Blugold offense came alive in the third period, as Courtney Wittig (Jr. – Green Bay, WI/Bay Port) put Eau Claire on the board at 13:38 with assists from Elizabeth Bauer (So. – Wausau, WI/East) and Kelly Knetter (Jr. – Wausau, WI/West).
Bauer tallied a goal of her own less than a minute later thanks to an assist from Emma Peterson (Fr. – Superior, WI) but it was too little, too late for Eau Claire as they would run out of time.
The Blugolds out-shot the Yellowjackets 30-23, but were 0-8 on power plays.
Anna Veazey (So. - Rapid City, SD/Dakota Ridge) took the loss in goal, recording 20 saves on the night.
The Blugolds (3-1-1) will be back on the road next week as the travel to UW-River Falls on Saturday. The puck will drop at 2:05 p.m. Follow all the action on Blugold Game Day.
