Spring Senior Spotlight - Women's Golf's Abbie Ter Maat

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak forcing the sudden cancelation of the spring sports seasons, the athletic department will be highlighting the senior student-athletes from our spring sports as their careers have been cut short.

What are your plans after graduation?

Right now I am looking for teaching jobs in Wisconsin and starting the interview process. If I secured my dream teaching job, I would be in a first or second-grade classroom.

What is your favorite memory with your team?

My favorite memory with my team would be the conference tournament my senior year. Every person on the team gets to travel to the conference tournament and we all get to share a giant suite at the Wilderness. Our round the second day got rained out and we were all wet and cold, but we went back to the hotel warmed up, and choreographed a dance. It is a great example of how this group of girls can turn a bad situation into a good one so easily. The next day all of the girls prepared for an extra-long day due to half the tournament being canceled the day before and played some amazing golf. I was so proud of them for not giving up on the weekend after the rain.

Favorite class/professor?

The education department at UWEC has great professors who I am beyond happy I had the opportunity to work with, but one stands out in particular, Dr. Worley. Over the last three years of having him as a professor, he has taught me how to become a better educator and challenged me to excel in my learning. His classes were engaging, and we always had the opportunity to be active and participate in his classroom. My favorite thing about Dr. Worley is how he takes time to get to know all of his students and what is important to them, it makes you feel like you belong in his class.

Do you have any advice for your younger teammates or future Blugolds?

Do not take time with your teammates for granted. These teammates will become some of your best friends and the people you go to when you need support. The older members of your team are a great resource for you and will almost always be willing to support you. I know I personally have met some of my favorite people through being a student-athlete.

What's the best part about being a Blugold?

Blugolds seems to be some of the best people I have ever met. UWEC is a great community!

Head Coach Darrin Skinner on Ter Maat:

"Abbie really improved this year on the course and has been an outstanding student.  She was so valuable with bringing new players in with her outgoing personality and ability to keep things fun."
