EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - UW-Eau Claire women's basketball head coach Tonja Englund recently announced the team award winners for the 2013-14 season.
Courtney Lewis (Jr.-Prairie du Chien, Wis.) and Teenie Lichtfuss (So.-Oshkosh, Wis./Lourdes) shared the Most Valuable Player award.
Lewis was second on the team and 10th in the WIAC in scoring, averaging 11.4 points per game. She also led the team and was 13th in the WIAC in rebounding, averaging 5.7 per contest. Lewis also finished second on the team in average minutes played and assists. She received All-WIAC honorable mention status the past two seasons. Lewis also won the Blugold Award and received a Captains Award this year. Previously she was named the team's Co-Defensive Player of the Year last year and Rookie of the Year two seasons ago.
Lichtfuss, who was named to the All-WIAC first team, had a team-high 13.9 points, 3.52 assists and 2.52 steals per game, all of which ranked fifth or better in the WIAC. Lichtfuss was second on the team in rebounding, averaging 4.8 per game, and led the team and conference in minutes played per game. A season ago, Lichtfuss was named the team's Rookie of the Year. Lichtfuss was also Co-Defensive Player of the Year with Ellen Blacklock (Fr.-Winona, Minn.).
Blacklock led the Blugolds and the WIAC in blocked shots per game with 2.16 for a total of 41 during the season. She was also third on the team and 19th in the WIAC in rebounding with 4.7 per game. Blacklock also won the team's Most Improved Player honor.
Named Rookie of the Year was Abby Midtlien (Fr.-Chaseburg, Wis./Westby). Starting 22 games and playing in all 25, Midtlien led the Blugolds and was ninth in the WIAC averaging 1.4 three-pointers made per game. She also had a three-point shooting percentage of .318, second on the team and 11th in the conference.
Kristin Sahr (Jr.-Stillwater, Minn.) was presented with a Captains Award. Sahr led the Blugolds in three-point field goal percentage, making 33.3 percent of her shots (25-for-75). Playing in 22 games, six of which she started, Sahr was third on the team in scoring, averaging 8.6 points per games, which was 23rd best in the league. Last year Sahr earned team Most Improved honors.
