MADISON, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – Three UW-Eau Claire women's basketball players were named first team All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) selections as the complete set of conference honors was announced by the WIAC today.
Named to the first team were Nicole Christianson (Sr.-Chetek, Wis.), Callie Halama (Sr.-Independence, Wis.) and Ellen Plendl (Sr.-Chippewa Falls, Wis./McDonell).
Christianson currently leads the Blugolds and the league with 107 assists, an average of 4.12 per game. She also leads the Blugolds and is second in the WIAC with 49 three-pointers made. A season ago, Christianson was recognized on the All-WIAC honorable mention team.
Halama is fifth in the WIAC and leads the team averaging 13.2 points per game, and is first in the conference in field goal percentage with a mark of .626. She is also fifth in the WIAC averaging 6.9 rebounds per game and is second in offensive rebounding with 3.68 per game.
Plendl, who was also named to the All-Defensive team for the second consecutive season, leads the conference with 107 blocks, a school and WIAC single-season record. She has 252 blocks in her career, a mark that is a school best (previous best was 213 by Arlene Meinholz, achieved between 1991 and 1995). Plendl is also second in the WIAC with 11.1 rebounds per game, but leads the WIAC in offensive rebounding, and is tied for sixth in scoring with 13 points per game. Plendl previously received recognition by being named to the All-WIAC honorable mention list in 2010.
Receiving honorable mention recognition this season was Sarah Bingea (Jr.-Delano, Minn.). She is fourth on the team averaging 9.9 points per game and has started all 26 games this season. Bingea leads the Blugolds this season shooting 78.9 percent from the free throw line, a mark that is eighth best in the WIAC.
Named to the All-Sportsmanship Team was Jess Freagon (Sr.-Chippewa Falls, Wis./McDonell). The team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. It included one member from each school.
