Softball Starts WIAC Championship with Win over Oshkosh

MENOMONIE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire softball team opened the 2014 WIAC Championship with a 4-0 victory over UW-Oshkosh today.

The Blugolds struck first in the top of the fifth inning. With two on and one out, Kenzie Winning (Fr.-Waupun, Wis.) scored while Amanda Fischer (Jr.-Wausau, Wis./West) reached on a fielder's choice after Amanda Houle (Sr.-Chisago City, Minn./Chisago Lakes) was thrown out at second base.

Up 1-0, the Blugolds added three more runs in the top of the seventh. With two runners on, one of which reached on an error, and just one out, Fischer hit her 11th home run of the season to give the Blugolds three runs. The homer tied a single-season school record, which Casey Leisgang accomplished in both 2006 and 2008.

The Blugolds finished the game with six hits while the Titans had three. Fischer led the game with four RBI while Casey Arnold (Jr.-Kaukauna, Wis.) and Winning tied for a game-high with two hits each.

In the circle, Laura Raflik (Jr.-Plover, Wis./Pacelli) pitched a complete game, her seventh of the year, improving to 10-4 overall. She struck out seven batters, a career-high, while giving up just three hits.

Eau Claire is now 25-14 overall while Oshkosh drops to 23-10.

Saturday the Blugolds will be in action, facing UW-Whitewater at noon. Whitewater beat UW-La Crosse 2-1 earlier today. UW-Stout and UW-Oshkosh will play each other at 10 a.m. Saturday.
