Green and Szmul Selected to Represent Team USA at World University Games

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (blugolds.com) – University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's hockey players Quinn Green (Jr. – West Chicago, Ill.) and Connor Szmul (Jr. – Castle Rock, Colo./Castle View) have been selected to represent Team USA at the 2023 FISU World University Games. The Blugold duo will join head coach Matt Loen, who was named the associate head coach back in October, as part of the 23-player roster.

The 2023 FISU Winter World University Games will be held January 11-21, 2023, in Lake Placid, N.Y. The women's tournament features eight teams competing in a round robin to advance four teams to the playoffs, while the men's tournament will have 12 teams. The preliminary round will feature two pools of six teams each, with the top two finishers in each pool advancing to the playoffs.

In 12 games this year, Green and Szmul have combined for 12 goals and 11 assists for the Blugolds, including a game-winning goal each. Through two years at UW-Eau Claire, both UWEC forwards have contributed to the Blugold offense in a big way. Quinn Green has 15 goals and 12 assists in 42 games, and Connor Szmul recorded 11 goals and 9 assists in 32 contests.

The Team USA men's team is set to open round robin play on Wednesday, Jan. 11, when they host Great Britain at Clarkson University's Cheel Arena in Potsdam, N.Y. UW-Eau Claire head coach Matt Loen is an associate head coach for Team USA.

Staged every two years in a different city, the Games are an international multi-sport event organized for university student-athletes by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). Teams from more than 50 nations will compete in 86 medal events. University students currently enrolled in an approved academic institution and proceeding toward a degree, or who have completed/obtained their degree in the calendar year preceding the Games are eligible.
