Men's Hockey Sweeps Weekend Series Against Stout

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - For the first time since 1997, the UW-Eau Claire men's hockey team swept a weekend series against 13th-ranked UW-Stout with a 5-2 win at Hobbs Ice Center tonight.

The Blugolds, who beat Stout last night 4-3 in Menomonie, have won three in a row over the Blue Devils. Stout has not beaten Eau Claire since Feb. 21, 2009. The last time Eau Claire won both games in a Friday-Saturday series was Oct. 24 and 25, 1997.

The win was the fourth in a row for the Blugolds and sixth win this season over a ranked opponent. The Blugolds are now 7-4 overall and 3-3 in the NCHA. Stout falls to 7-5 on the season and 4-4 in the NCHA.

In tonight's game, the Blugolds were up by just one goal after the first period but scored four in the second. They wouldn't find the net in the third period while Stout scored both of its goals in the final period.

Tyler Jundt (Jr.-Williston, N.D.) scored first for Eau Claire at 12:29 in the first period on an assist from Tyler Romasco (Jr.-Perry, Ohio). The goal was Jundt's first of the season and came on a power-play.

In the second period, three different Blugolds scored four goals. Kurt Weston (So.-Roseau, Minn.) gave the Blugolds a 2-0 lead just over a minute into the period. Romasco scored at 11:28 while Eric OHearn (So.-Traverse City, Mich./Central) found the back of the net at 12:35. Weston added another goal to give the Blugolds a five-goal lead at 16:44.

In the third period, the Blue Devils recorded goals at 4:38 and 12:36. The final goal came on a power-play.

The teams were even in shooting with 31 shots each and almost equal in penalties. Stout committed 16 while Eau Claire finished with 18. Each team scored a goal on power-plays as Stout finished 1-for-7 and Eau Claire was 1-for-6.

Brandon Stephenson (So.-Saline, Mich.) improved to 7-1 on the season, playing the entire game in the net for Eau Claire. He picked up 29 saves.

The Blugolds will be back at home next weekend for two more games. The Blugolds will face UW-Stevens Point on Friday and Saturday. Both games are set to start at 7 p.m.
