Men's Hockey Falls to Top Ranked St. Norbert

DE PERE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire men's hockey team scored in each period, but it wasn't enough to overcome No. 1 St. Norbert College (Wis.), as the Blugolds fell 6-3 tonight at Cornerstone Center.

The Blugolds went toe-to-toe with St. Norbert for most of the night. When the Green Knights gained the early edge with a goal in the first two minutes of play, Kurt Weston (So.-Roseau, Minn.) retaliated with a goal at the 6:38 minute mark to tie up the score.

The alternating scoring pattern continued throughout the second and early third periods. Jordan Singer (So.-Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) – assisted by Jon Waggoner (Fr.-Fairbanks, Alaska/Lathrop) – made it a 2-2 game at 2:38 into the second. After St. Norbert tallied a score late in the second, Isaiah Bennis (So.-Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) notched the tying goal 7:50 in the third on a power play.

But after fighting back three times, Eau Claire just couldn't edge out in front of St. Norbert. The Green Knights scampered away with the lead, chipping in three more goals before the game concluded.

The Green Knights totaled six more shots during the game, outshooting the Blugolds 34-28. Brandon Stephenson (So.-Saline, Mich.) saved 28 of St. Norbert's shots during the 60 minutes of play. St. Norbert was also more successful on the power play, converting three of five chances. Eau Claire scored one goal in seven power play attempts.

The Blugolds are now 10-6 on the season and drop to 4-5 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association. The Green Knights improve to 8-1 in the conference.

The Blugolds hit the ice tomorrow night for a rematch against St. Norbert. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. in De Pere.
