Blugolds Endure Overtime Loss to Augsburg

ST. PAUL, Minn. (Blugolds.com) - Just 63 seconds from ending the competition in a tie, the UW-Eau Claire men's hockey team yielded a late overtime goal and dropped its first game of the season 2-1 to Augsburg College (Minn.).

Augsburg kicked off the scoring, converting on a power play to go up 1-0 at the 5:38 minute mark. Exactly one period later, Ami Peled (Fr.-Encino, Calif./Bloomington Jefferson (MN)) scored an unassisted goal to get the Blugolds back in the game and even up the score.

Neither team gained an advantage the remainder of the game and the teams took it to overtime. With just over a minute remaining before the game ended in a tie, Augsburg found the back of the Blugold net and handed Eau Claire its first loss of the season. The Blugolds are now 2-1 on the year.

Despite the loss, Eau Claire outshot 35-29. As the Eau Claire goalie for the entire 63:57, Scott Pederson (Jr.-Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake) made 27 saves during the night. The Blugolds failed to convert on any of their five power play opportunities; Augsburg capitalized on one of their seven chances.

Next Friday and Saturday, the Blugolds play a pair of conference games at UW-River Falls. The games will begin at 7 p.m. each night.
