Voigt's big night powers Blugolds past Yellowjackets

SUPERIOR, Wis. (blugolds.com) — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's basketball team started a win streak thanks to an 81-62 road victory over UW-Superior on Thursday night. Forward Brock Voigt (Sr. - Sun Prairie, Wis.) had a career night for the Blugolds, tallying 26 points, 15 rebounds and five steals.

Voigt's 15 rebounds and five steals were both career bests. His 26 points were the third-best total in his career. It helped the Blugolds win for the second consecutive game.

The Blugolds fell behind in the early stages of the first half, but used a 9-0 run to get back into the game. Each side traded leads and stayed within striking distance of each other until the final few minutes of the first half. A free throw from Voigt started a 12-6 run for UW-Eau Claire, putting the Blugolds ahead 38-32 at halftime.

The Yellowjackets pulled within one of the Blugolds early in the second half, but Carter Huschka (Jr. - Farmington, Minn.) threw down a dunk and Voigt made a 3-pointer to help re-establish a comfortable cushion. The Blugolds turned a 45-40 lead into an 11-point advantage with a quick run right around the halfway mark in the second half. UW-Eau Claire led by double figures the rest of the way.

The Blugolds shot 49% from the field and made 10 3-pointers, marking the fourth straight game the team made 10 or more shots from behind the arc. UW-Eau Claire won the rebound battle 44-25 and scored 17 second-chance points.

Huschka finished with a career-high 13 points for the Blugolds. Michael Casper (Jr. - Merrill, Wis.) added 12 points, and Gunnar Tebon (Jr. - Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) and Cade Hall (Jr. - Mauston, Wis.) scored 10 apiece. Hall also had five rebounds. Alex Voigt (Sr. - Sun Prairie, Wis.) had five points and five rebounds.

The Blugolds go back on the road on Saturday, Dec. 17, to face St. Norbert College. Tip-off in De Pere, Wis., is set for 3 p.m.
